COMA
Irish Whiskey Bottle Design
Project details: In November 2022, Ryan Marrie and his business partner commissioned a design for a cask of whiskey the two had purchased in Mayo County, Ireland. Marrie, whose lineage is from Mayo County, requested that the label reference the county’s 17th-century pirate history and, if possible, the legacy of Mayo’s “Pirate Queen” Grace O’Malley.
Process: Grace presented Marrie with three unique designs, each featuring Celtic typography, Irish symbolism, pirate references, and sparing use of gold leaf. Due to the lack of existing imagery of Grace O’Malley, only one option included a full portrait of the Pirate Queen, while the other two featured ships.
End result: The client was very pleased with all options and requested extended time to consider them. Ultimately, the two chose the first, dark ship option. The whiskey is expected to be bottled and distributed in 2025.
