The Dayton Arcade

Hexagonal Print

Project details: In Graphic Design II at the University of Dayton, students were assigned a project to practice print and information design. They were challenged to design and construct a well-researched and structurally complex printed piece about the newly renovated Dayton Arcade, a historically significant collection of nine buildings located in the central business district of Dayton, Ohio.

The unique hexagonal shape of the print references the building’s structural makeup and includes three tiers of information. Tier one provides arcade-specific information, tier two focuses on Dayton-specific details, and tier three offers broader national context.

The piece is designed to be viewed holistically or by following each appendage, which is grouped by decade. The colors green and gold, along with textures, reference the content surrounding commerce and industry.

End result: After many trials and errors, the final piece reflected Grace’s original vision and received positive reviews from peers and faculty.
